TermDescription [ EN / PL ]
I/O(Input/Output) Input or output or both
I/O CHANNELChannel used to transfer data between input/output devices and the CNC.
ICIntegrated circuit
IDLERA gear or gears placed between two other gears to transfer motion from one gear to the other gear without changing their speed or ratio.
IEEEInstitute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers
IMAGINARY TOOL NOTEPoint defined on an imaginary axial straight line extending from the tip of a tool. This makes it easier to set the tool to its start position or reference position.
IN-POSITIONState in which a servo motor is positioned to a point within a specified range (previously set in the CNC).
INCH THREADINGPrecise threading in which the number of thread crests per inch is specified.
INCH/METRIC SWITCHINGSelecting whether data is to be input in inch or metric units.
INCREMENT SYSTEMGeneric term for least input increment and least command increment.
INCREMENTAL DIMENSIONA dimension expressed with respect to the preceding point in a sequence of points
INCREMENTAL FEEDA manual or automatic input of preset motion command for a machine axis
INCREMENTAL PROGRAMMINGProgramming using words indicating incremental dimensions
INCREMENTAL SYSTEMControl system in which each co-ordinate or positional dimension is taken frcm the last position.
INCREMENTAL FEEDFeeding a controlled axis by a preset amount each time the corresponding button is pressed.
INCREMENTAL PROGRAMMINGMethod by which an amount of tool movement (relative to the previous tool position) is programmed.
INCREMENTAL VALUEDistance or angle relative to the previous position.
INDEPENDENT CHUCKA chuck in which each jaw may be moved independently of the others.
INDEX PLATEA metal disk or plate punched with many holes arranged in a series of rings, one outside the other each ring containing a different number of holes.
INDEX TABLE INDEXING FUNCTIONIndexing on the index table of a machining center.
INDEXINGMovement of one axis at a time to a precise point frcm numeric commands
INDEXING FIXTUREA complete indexing unit composed of a dividing head and rootstock
INDICATORA precision instrument which shows variations of thousandths of an inch or less when testing the trueness or alignment of a workpiece, fixture, or machine.
INDUCTOSYN SCALEA precision data element for the accurate measurement and control of angles or linear distances, utilizing the inductive coupling between conductors separated by a small air gap
INHIBITTo prevent an action or acceptance of data by applying an appropriate signal to the appropriate input
INITIAL POSITIONLevel in a hole axial direction to which positioning is performed for the first time during a canned hole machining cycle. Succeeding drills return to the R Plane.
INITIALIZETo cause a programme or hardware circuit to return a programme, a system, or a hardware device to an original state or to selected points with a computer programme
INPUT RESOLUTIONThe smallest increment of dimension that can be programmed as input to the system
INPUTA dependent variable applied to a control unit or system
INPUT BUFFERArea into which input data is temporarily saved.
INSERTED-TOOTH CUTTERA milling cutter designed with replaceable cutting tooth inserts to save the expense of a new cutter whenever the teeth become damaged or worn. Generally, they are made 6 inches or more in diameter.
INSERTSInserts are cutting tips made of carbide, diamond, ceramic, or other materials, which can be easily inserted onto a cutting tool so you don’t have to remove and replace the entire tool when a tip becomes dull.
INSTABILITYThe state of property of a system where there is an output for which there is not corresponding input
INSTRUCTION SETThe list of machine language instructions which a computer can perform
INSTRUCTIONA statement that specifies an operation and the values or locations of its operands
INTEGRATED CIRCUIT (IC)A combination of interconnected passive and active circuit elements incorporated on a continuous substrate
INTEGRATORA device which integrates an input signal, usually with respect to time
INTELLIGENT TERMINALA terminal which has its own local processing power.
INTERACTIVE GRAPHICSAbility to carry out graphics tasks with immediate response from the computer
INTERFACE1. A hardware component or circuit for linking two pieces of electrical equipment having separate functions. E.g., tape reader to data processor or control system to machine. 2. A hardware component- or circuit for linking the computer to external I/O device
INTERFERENCE CHECKPreventing a tool from overcutting the workpiece or from striking the tool on the other tool post.
INTERFEROMETERAn instrument that uses light interference phenomena for determination of wavelength, spectral fine structure, indices of refraction, and very snail linear displacements
INTERLOCK BY-PASSA command to temporarily circumvent a normally provided interlock
INTERLOCKTo arrange the control of machines or devices so that their operation is interdependent in order to assure their proper co-ordination
INTERLOCKPreventing the movement of a controlled axis. This function is enabled by supplying an interlock signal to the CNC.
INTERMEDIATE GEARA gear or gears placed between two other gears to transfer motion from one gear to the other gear without changing their speed or ratio
INTERNAL CIRCULAR CUTTING FEEDRATE CHANGEControlling circular cutting so that the feedrate for a programmed path matches the specified cutting feedrate when the actual tool path is offset within the programmed tool path.
INTERPOLATION1. The insertion of intermediate information based on assumed order or computation. 2. A function of a control whereby data points are generated between given co-ordinate positions to allow simultaneous movement of two or more axes of motion in a defined geometric pattern. E.g., linear, circular and parabolic.
INTERPOLATION FUNCTIONSObtaining a tool path according to a function (such as a linear or arc function) corresponding to a specified preparatory function.
INTERPOLATORA device which is part of a numerical control system and performs interpolation
INTERRUPTA break in the execution of a sequential programme or routine, to permit processing of high priority data
INTERRUPTION TYPE CUSTOM MACROCalling a program to be executed by entering an interrupt signal to the CNC during the execution of another program.
INVERSE TIME FEEDCutting feed for which the reciprocal of the time required to feed the tool is specified.
INVOLUTE INTERPOLATIONDetermining the path necessary to move the tool along an involute curve in a specified plane.
ISO CODEInformation exchange code complying with the applicable ISO standard. Used in numerical control.
ITERATIONA set of repetitive computations, in which the output of each step is the input to the next step
